Spring Break – The Sunfood Way

Spring Break – The Sunfood Way

It’s officially check-in time! How is everyone progressing with the Triple D Spring Clean? Have you been detaching, detoxing and decluttering with a new zest for life throughout the past week? How are you feeling? What are you thinking? What are you planning now that your minds, bodies and homes are more spacious?

I encourage you to continue on with your Spring Cleaning in whatever way you see fit. If that means placing more emphasis on Decluttering — go for it! Keep removing 27 items from your home or office on a daily basis. Or, perhaps you´re more inclined to focus on Detoxification since a spring break escape may be right around the corner, and we all want to look and FEEL our best when we slip into our bikinis and board shorts, right?  So today, let’s dive in and demystify Detoxification – the “Sunfood” way!

Last week my husband and I enjoyed a mini spring break. It was the first time we traveled out of Quito in over four months and boy were we ready to get in the car and drive out of the city, literally here in “la mitad del mundo.” My husband’s intense work schedule as a resident surgeon at an oncology hospital had nearly drained his battery, and for the past month I’ve been feeling super home sick. I completed Bikram Teacher Training last fall, quite literally a dream come true after maintaining a regular practice for ten years. I returned to Quito in November having lived and breathed all things hot and sweaty yoga for 9 weeks. However, returning to Quito where there is not a proper studio oftentimes feels like a huge part of me is missing — my makeshift Bikram studio is the sauna at the local gym. Needless to say, our weekend retreat came at the perfect time.

The day after the official start of spring, we headed to  Vilcabamba, a.k.a. Ecuador’s Valley of Longevity, where we had booked for a 3-night stay at Madre Tierra Hotel and Spa. A stay at “Mother Earth” in the Valley of Longevity sounded like a match made in heaven! In Vilcabamba the locals assert that it is not uncommon to see a person reach 100 years of age and it is claimed that many reach 120, even up to 135, which would make it an area with the oldest inhabitants in the world.

With GPS navigating the way for our 680km cross-country trip, I didn’t have much to manage as co-pilot. Perfect! 9.5 hours to catch up on some long-overdue reading. While I’d skimmed David Wolfe’s book Sunfood Diet Success System in 2011, I was keen on giving it a thorough read. Wolfe is an internationally acclaimed health lecturer and one of the world’s foremost authorities on raw-food nutrition (his books Eating For Beauty and Naked Chocolate are also must-reads for any wellness aficionado). I knew there was a chapter in “Sunfood” on Detoxification, so found it quite fitting for the timing of our trip which was speckled with detox rituals, juicing and simple raw eating, all part of my personal Spring Cleaning plan. So without further ado, I cracked open the book.

The “Sunfood Diet Success System” is deeper than detox. It’s about boosting the immune system, enhancing relationships, lengthening  life, coming closer to the spiritual realm, clearing emotional blockages and improving performance in all areas of life. Essentially, it´s about creating a healthier happier life for you and those around you.

Instant Transformation

David Wolfe, Detoxification, The Sunfood Diet Success System

What if your life was suddenly changed?
How would you feel if your destiny was one day – exchanged?
How long does each moment last?
How would your life be if you rewrote your past?
Could life be more than it seems?
What if you become something more – on the way to your dreams?
Can you undo the things you’ve done?
Just how and when is a new life begun?
Are such transformations true?
What if you awoke and everything was new?
What would you do or say?
What if your moment of transformation happened – today?

Detoxification can be the greatest event of your life, as you will slowly become more aware of your body´s true condition. The process of detoxification is non-linear. It travels in circles and waves and heals you in cycles, and depending on your previous dietary habits, you may feel worse before you feel better as toxicity is washed out of the body.

Remember that detoxification is an ¨unwinding¨ process during which you must nurture yourself and be kind and gentle to your body, mind and spirit. Just as it takes years for your tissues to become encumbered by improper materials, so too does it take years to dissolve and eliminate these improper materials. Wolfe says, ¨it takes one month on a 100% Sunfood Diet to reverse one year on a cooked, toxic diet. So, if one is 45 years young, then it will take 45 months to detoxify the body on a 100% Sunfood Diet.

We are all in the process of becoming and are constantly evolving into something different based upon the air, water, food and thoughts ingested. 98% of the atoms in the body are replaced in two years, and within seven years, 100% of the body is replaced. Using brand new ¨high quality¨materials, you can completely reconstruct your body.

What is your Detox goal? Whether you aim to eliminate dairy, eat more greens or establish a daily pranayama practice, I encourage you to write down your goal(s) and follow the 12 Steps (plus ONE) below.

Wolfe refers to a study cited in the book Unlimited Power by Anthony Robbins: A study of the 1953 graduates of Yale University clearly demonstrates the power of goals. The graduates interviewed were asked if they had a clear, specific set of goals written down with a plan for achieving those goals. Only 3% had such written goals. Twenty years later, in 1973, the researchers went back and interviewed the surviving members only to discover that the 3% with written specific goals were worth more in financial terms than the other 97% combined. The interviewers also discovered that the more subjective measures, like happiness and joy, were also superior in the 3% with written goals.

12 Steps to Achieve Goals

  1. Develop an intense desire to achieve your goals
  2. Develop a strong belief in your goals
  3. Write down your goals
  4. Determine how you will benefit from achieving your goals
  5. Analyze your starting point
  6. Set deadlines to achieve your goals
  7. Identify the obstacles that stand in your way
  8. Identify the additional knowledge or information you will require
  9. Identify the people whose cooperation you will require
  10. Make a plan to achieve your goals
  11. Visualize (MEDITATE!) the achievement of your goals
  12. Persist until your goals are achieved

And here’s the 13th step: have faith in your goals (AH HA MOMENT). Go confidently into the unknown. Believe in your own abilities. Those who have faith, have everything, including optimum health!

As promised last week, here are some recipes to get your creative juices flowing to create your goal list.

  • 1 apple
  • 1 pear
  • 1 bowl of berries
  • 2 T spirulina
  • 2 T flax oil

Add water and blend to desired consistency. The pectin in the apples and pears stimulates a bowel movement. Berries are blood builders. Spirulina adds trace minerals and flax oil allows a slow time release of fructose into the blood.

DETOX SALAD (OIL FREE/VEGAN) inspired by Whole Foods

  • 2 heads broccoli (1 bunch), stems removed
  • 1 head cauliflower, stems removed
  • 2.5 cups shredded carrots
  • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds

  • 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 4-6 tbsp fresh lemon juice, to taste
  • kosher salt, pepper to taste (1/4-1/2 tsp salt and lots of pepper)
  • kelp granules or Herbamare (optional), to taste
  • Pure maple syrup, to drizzle on before serving
  1. In a food processor process the broccoli until fine. Add into large bowl
  2. Process the cauliflower until fine and add into bowl. Do the same with the carrots
  3. Stir in the sunflower seeds, currants, raisins, and parsley. Add lemon juice/seasonings to taste
  4. Drizzle with maple syrup to taste

  • 1 C Stone Ground Almond Butter
  • 1/2 C Organic Maca Powder
  • 1/2 C Carob Powder
  1. Mix all ingredients together
  2. Roll in hemp seeds for a healthy dose of medium-chain Omega 3 EFA

Wolfe says 100 goals should be your starting point! Keep the faith, shine on like the beautiful village people in Vilcabamba, and enjoy your ¨Sunfood¨inspired spring break!
